Membership in the Western Society of Periodontology

WSP is committed to providing scientific information, clinical experiences and educational forums emphasizing the relationship of periodontal health to other aspects of dentistry and medicine.

The Society includes the following sections:
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Intermountain
  • Colorado
  • Oregon
  • Washington

The Western Society of Periodontology was formed in 1952 by a small group of faculty members in periodontology at the University of Southern California. WSP is an organization dedicated to fostering education in the field of periodontics. It is a unique, cohesive membership of dental hygienists, general dentists, periodontists and other related dental specialists/auxiliaries. There is no other organization with this format in the world whose emphasis is education in periodontics and is non-political.

The geographic boundaries encompass Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, the Canadian Provinces from British Columbia to and including Manitoba, and Mexico. Nonresident members span the United States and several foreign countries.

The Western Society of Periodontology provides a variety of meetings each year throughout the geographic area. A Scientific Session and Membership Meeting is held annually. Team Sessions for Dentists and Hygienists are held in locations throughout the WSP membership regions. A highly acclaimed mid-winter meeting is held each year in a different ski resort area in the west.

The WSP sponsors study clubs in several geographic areas. These clubs provide a combination of didactic and clinical material. The pilot program began in 1978, and new clubs are formed to meet the needs of different regions.

Membership Benefits

CONTINUING EDUCATION is provided throughout the region during the year, representing over 50 continuing education credits each year. Members receive considerable savings on postgraduate courses.

The Journal of The Western Society of Periodontology, PERIODONTAL ABSTRACTS, is a quarterly publication providing literature reviews, original articles and abstracts of current literature related to periodontology. It has been in continuous publication since 1953 and is a nationally recognized publication of significance.

NEWSLETTERS are publications that contain news of the Society and of each Section, reviews of WSP continuing education courses, and previews of educational sessions.

STUDY CLUBS provide a clinical experience approach to the study of periodontics. Dental hygiene study clubs are active in many areas throughout the region.

FELLOWSHIP is the camaraderie of local members as well as interstate communication with fellow members. The Society is also a good information source for patients who relocate.
